The role of a plaster mold in ceramics

When making ceramics, everything starts with the mold. Anyone who thinks that every object is turned by hand is mistaken: much of the ceramics are actually created by pouring liquid clay into plaster molds. This is a craft in itself, in which experience, precision, and a feel for the material are crucial.

From idea to model

Before casting can take place, a prototype must first be created. At Dutchceramics, we usually make this ourselves, based on a sketch or photo. We mold, cut, and sand until the shape is just right. Nowadays, we sometimes use 3D printing, which is useful when a customer already provides a digital design. This allows us to work directly from model to mold, saving time and money.

The master mold as a basis

For larger productions, a master mold is needed: a hard, positive plaster form from which multiple casting molds can later be made. Each casting mold is a negative copy of this master mold. Once the liquid clay mixture (also called slurry) is poured into the mold, the porous plaster slowly sucks out the moisture. This creates a solid clay wall, known as greenware. After the excess slurry has drained away, a thin crust remains, which forms the basis of the final product.

In-house molds

At Dutchceramics, we make most of our molds ourselves. They form the silent basis of many of our collections, from Delft blue animals to our Delft blue Christmas decorations. This allows us to maintain control over quality and every detail. Sometimes we also make molds on commission for others, for example when someone wants to have their own design cast. This remains a small part of our work, but it is always special to bring someone else's idea to life in ceramics.

Discover our collection of Delft Blue

Making a good mold requires knowledge, time, and attention. It is a process that starts with a lump of plaster and ends with a perfectly fitting shape. Only then can the real work begin: casting, drying, firing, and glazing. A plaster mold is the starting point for every ceramic work of art, whether it is a large vase, a small figurine, or a classic piece of Delft Blue.

When you buy a piece of ceramics from us, you are not only bringing a beautiful object into your home, but also the result of craftsmanship that has been passed down for generations. Each statue, vase, or figurine is the end result of this careful process and the beginning of a new story in your home. Discover our collection and experience for yourself why genuine Delft Blue never goes out of style.
