The process of making ceramic violins
What could be more beautiful than violin music? Ever since the 16th century, this instrument has known how to touch people. It all started in northern Italy, where handy craftsmen made the first violins. From classical concerts to folk music - it is impossible to imagine the music world without the violin. And did you know that composers such as Bach and Mozart wrote especially for this instrument? The violin is known for its warm sound that has been moving people for centuries
How a violin inspired us
That beautiful shape of a violin.... we had to do something with it! As makers of Delftware, we immediately saw the possibilities. After all, why not recreate such a beautiful instrument in ceramic? We thought it would be a great challenge to capture those graceful lines and curves in clay. And so the idea was born to immortalize the violin in our traditional ceramics.
From clay to a work of art
Making a ceramic violin is quite complicated. We start with liquid clay that we carefully pour into a mold. In the beginning it is still enormously fragile: You can hardly touch it. After drying, it goes into the kiln for the first time. Then comes the best part: our painters get to work on the decorations. Then we dip the violin in a special enamel glaze bath for that beautiful shine. As a final step, it goes into the kiln for the enamel firing. Each piece that comes out of this final firing is unique because of the handwork.
Our violin collection
You can choose from two sizes with us: a large one of 48 centimeters and a smaller one of 22 centimeters. We make different versions: traditional Delft blue with windmills or ornate floral patterns, as well as polychrome versions and ones with red tulips. One of our special pieces is the large violin with red tulips, painted by Jan Born, one of our master painters. Each violin is made with the utmost care and is a tribute to this beautiful instrument.
